— n. Pharm.
  1. a crystalline, poisonous alkaloid, CHNO, obtained by extraction from lobelia: used chiefly in the form of its sulfate or hydrochloride as a respiratory stimulant and, because of its nicotinelike pharmacological action, as an agent to discourage tobacco smoking.
